MAZABUKA Golf Club shone after putting up a spirited performance to top the Zambia Junior Golf Association (ZJGA) Southern league with 18 points after games played at the weekend.
The tournament was played at the Chainama Hills and Mazabuka Golf Club on Sunday. The league has been divided into two, Northern and Southern, and will run simultaneously throughout the year.
Chainama, Lusaka and Sanje make up the Southern Division and will be playing from Chainama Hills Golf Club while Mazabuka, Chilanga, Choma, Maamba and Monze will be based at Mazabuka Golf Club.
On the course, Mazabuka amassed 18 points after a two-round match play as the Lusaka team of Jahaanvie Walya, Kyle Phiri, Aryaman Mohan, Melody Chileshe, Noble Findlay and Kangwa Chewe just trailed in second place on 17 points.
Chilanga finished third on 14 points with the hosts who had the likes of Musonda Kapoma, Richard Muziya, Jonathan Sililo, Peter Phiri, Mwila Mulenga and Netsai Mwango amassing 12 points while Choma, Maamba and Monze combined to make a team managed four points.
Chipata, Kabwe, Mkushi, Mazabuka and Livingstone are the other teams in the Southern league.
Meanwhile, Zambia Junior Golf Association (ZJGA) director Chongo Kasongole said the NorthernDivision league will be expected to tee off this monthend adding that some teams in the Southern League have equally not started owing to school programmes.
Kasongole said the association will have to embark on a crashed programme to enable other teams catch up during school holidays and called on companies so help sponsor the programme.
“This is an important programme we will have embarked on as it will help us identify and develop these players at a young stage and also act as base for picking players into the national team,” he said.
