FIFTY-SIX families in Chambishi on the Copperbelt have been left homeless after their houses collapsed due to heavy rains.
Kalulushi Municipal Council assistant public relations manager Beauty Undi said in an interview that the collapsed houses were in Twaiteka Ward, which experienced heavy rains, leaving a trail of destruction to the houses and three foot bridges that were washed away.
Ms Undi said the disaster happened during the week when the area received a heavy downpour that started on Sunday and lasted up to Monday morning.
She said victims had been left destitute with most of them made to squat in other places.
Ms Undi said the washed away bridges had further caused transportation challenges for people in the affected areas.
“We are currently trying to come up with measures that will help cushion the impact of the disaster and we are contacting relevant authorities for relief,” Ms Undi said.
She also urged people to desist from constructing houses or any other structures in the waterlogged areas to avoid disasters.
