By STELLA SIMUTOWE –
THE United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has handed over US$25,000 worth of equipment to various schools in Zambia to enable pupils conduct research on climate change.
The equipment will go to 40 schools in the 10 provinces which have been designated as resource centres for climate ambassadors to enable them to conduct internet research and record their activities.
UNICEF country representative Hamid Ibrahim said the beneficiaries would use the equipment to improve communication and educate communities on climate change in the country.
In a speech read on his behalf by UNICEF Zambia chief of communications Patrick Slavin, Dr Ibrahim said it was important for children in schools to participate and take urgent action to combat climate change and its impact on the environment and economy.
“It is important to engage children to create a sustainable future for people to take good care of the environment. This equipment will complement the ongoing efforts by climate change ambassadors in presenting radio programmes on its effects,” Dr Ibrahim said.
He said there was need to take action to mitigate and adapt to climate change with massive sensitisation.
