THE Chinese contractor, China Energy Engineering, engaged to build Luapula University in Mansa District has moved on site.
Mansa District Commissioner Royd Chakaba said the contractor had already sub-contracted a Zambian contractor that had started bush clearing.
Mr Chakaba said the university would be put up at the Zambia Research Institute, and that the contractor was eager to commence works as soon as the funds were released.
He said the contract was for two years, starting in March 2016 and would be completed in March next year.
“The Patriotic Front Government remains committed to ensuring that education and higher learning facilities are brought closer to the people across the country,” Mr Chakaba said.
He said the residents were happy with the development and were looking forward to the university being completed and officially opened to the public.
Mr Chakaba also disclosed that rehabilitation of Lweba Bridge that collapsed in February after a heavy downpour was nearing completion.
He said the rehabilitation works were being done by the Rural Roads Unit and Zambia National Service.
Mr Chakaba assured the residents that the bridge would soon be completed and that the contractor had so far done commendable work.
