THE Local Government Service Commission has retired four council secretaries, citing poor performance.
The commission warned that it will not hesitate to drop non-performing public service workers who are a hindrance to delivery of quality service by local authorities.
LGSC secretary Lazarous Mulenda said those that had been dropped were from Zambezi, Serenje, Shan’gombo and Mongu local authorities.
The action was in line with the Local Authorities Superannuation Fund (LASF) guidelines.
Mr Mulenda said in an interview that the LGSC was monitoring the performance of officials to improve service delivery.
He said there were a number of reasons indicated in the LASF Act, which ranged from one not being efficient in the way they carried out their duties to reduced workforce.
He said the commission observed that council secretaries in this case, were not performing well and it was prudent that they be retired.
“There is nothing sinister in retiring council secretaries in national interest. We have retired four council secretaries in national interest in line with the LASF Act. If we see that someone is not performing to expectations, we make decisions and retire them, among other reasons,” he said.
He said other reasons for retiring council secretaries included, engaging in active politics and unsatisfactory performance and when the position being held had been abolished.
He said there were 103 local authorities and that the commission would drop anyone found wanting.
