Mufulira Municipal Council (MMC) has revamped the defunct local abattoir at a cost of K920,000, to significantly reduce the cost of doing business for butchery dealers.
The facility would be operated by the council to service Mufulira and the surrounding areas needing animal slaughtering and certification services.
MMC public relations manager Melvin Mukela said the modern abattoir has been completed and is only waiting commissioning.
Mr Mukela said in an interview in Mufulira that the abattoir would be able to provide services to the entire Copperbelt Province.
The abattoir would be capable of slaughtering more than 50 animals at a fee.
“The facility is now completed and we have spent a totalof K920,000, we are only waiting to commission it.
“The design we have used, is that of a provincial abattoir, because we looked at Kitwe, Ndola, Kalulushi and other surrounding areas which do not have abattoir facilities apart from Luanshya,” he said.
Mr Mukela observed that butchery dealers go as far as Luanshya to get their meat certified.
He said revamping the Mufulira abattoir would significantly reduce the cost of doing business for meat dealers.
Mr Mukela said the contractor has since put up final touches to the skin house while all the facilities have now been installed.
