LUNSEMFWA Hydropower Station may shut down power generation by October this year because of low water levels on its main dam.
The private power generating company that has the capacity of producing 25 megawatts is currently generating nine megawatts because of the unprecedented low water levels. Station manager Alick Kamanga said apart from reduced rainfall, the continuous water harvesting for agriculture in the upstream of the main dam had also contributed to the low water levels.
He told Central Province Permanent Secretary Daisy Ng’ambi who was on a familiarisation tour that the company was facing serious challenges in power generation.
Mr Kamanga said the water reservoir at the main dam levels had reduced to 177 feet from 220, making it difficult for the company to generate enough electricity.
