CARGILL is producing 1, 200 bags daily of breakfast mealie-meal at its milling plant in Chipata District in Eastern Province.
Cargill communication lead Emmanuel Mbewe said the production of 1, 200 by 25 kilogramme bags of mealie-meal meant that the border town was being adequately supplied with the commodity.
“Our milling plant is producing 1,200 by 25 kilogramme bags of breakfast mealie-meal daily from Government subsidised maize, meaning the scheme is going on well,” he said.
Mr Mbewe told journalists who were on a conducted tour of the plant on Wednesday that Cargill was happy that the commodity currently being produced was being supplied to local outlets and supermarkets that were later selling it at K75 per bag.
He said this was yielding positive results as far as the market for the commodity was concerned.
Mr Mbewe said mealie-meal was available on the market, adding that customers were being asked to make a declaration at Cargill before purchasing the commodity.
He commended the Government on its initiative to supply the Food Reserve Agency subsidised maize to the company, which was now bearing fruit.
Cargill was working with strategic outlets to ensure that the intended people received the commodity on time.
Mr Mbewe, however, said production of mealie-meal was sometimes affected by power interruptions.
