NDOLA City Council (NCC) is seeking partnership with the private sector to rehabilitate the public abattoir which has been in a disused state for over 20 years.
Council public relations manager Roy Kuseka said in an interview that the council was looking for a company to partner with in the rehabilitation of the public abattoir located in Chipulukusu Township.
He said that the facility would need a complete overhaul as the structure and the equipment were damaged beyond repair.
“The abattoir has not been operating for many years; the structure and the equipment cannot be repaired, so new equipment needs to be bought and the building will need to have a total overhaul for it to become operational,” he said.
Mr Kuseka said there would be need for a bill of quantity to be done to ascertain how much it would cost for the abattoir to become operational.
He said a company had earlier expressed interest to partner with the local authority but it later withdrew.
The council would soon advertise for partnership in the daily Press and called on interested parties to apply.
Mr Kuseka said the only abattoir which was currently operating in the city was owned by Quick Save Farms.
He also said the local authority would continue carrying out random inspections of butcheries to ensure that the meat sold was certified and safe for human consumption.
