THE Church is disappointed that political parties have not adhered to the measures they agreed to during an inter-political party indaba where they agreed to end political violence earlier in the year.
The Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) secretary general Cleophas Lungu said it is unfortunate that the political parties did not adhere to the measures that were discussed at the last indaba in March this year.
Father Lungu said that the church mother bodies expressed their disappointment during their second inter-party Indaba held on Tuesday this week.
“The church is disappointed that political parties have not done enough to stop political violence. So we did appeal to them in the meeting to do better from now on,” he said.
He was speaking to Radio Phoenix in an interview yesterday.
Father Lungu said he had faith that the political parties would do more to reach out to their members and curb violence.
It was unfortunate that instead of violence reducing, it had increased.
Father Lungu said political parties should show their sincere intentions to end violence.
The church mother bodies that held the two meetings are ZEC, Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) and the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ).
The first meeting was held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross at which most aspiring presidential candidates attended.
At that meeting, they agreed to stop using vulgar and hate speech, because it prompted violence.
They also agreed to restrain their cadres from participating in violence and also restrain cadres from wearing military regalia as it intimidated the public.
