GBM Big NewBy DELPHINE ZULU –

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has challenged United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema to explain to his members what values he saw in his running mate Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba to settle for him.
Mr Lungu said Mr Hichilema left out people like Canisius Banda and Mutale Nalumango in preference for Mr Mwamba as his running mate, but did not offer any explanation.
He said leaders had a duty to explain to their members and the nation at large what value their running mates had in the party to allow Zambians vote for them based on an informed decision.
“I have told my members and Zambians why I settled for Ms Inonge Wina and gave reasons, but why have others not chosen that? People need to have a choice, as for me I have satisfied my duty,” he said.
He advised Zambians to critically analyse all messages from presidential aspiring candidates in this year’s general elections to avoid falling prey to their lies.
Speaking on Hot FM radio morning live interview in Kawambwa District of Luapula Province where he had been for the past one week conducting rallies, President Lungu said he was optimistic that the Patriotic Front (PF) would garner all the votes.
And Mr Lungu advised magistrates handling cases of political violence to be fair in applying justice and ensure the proceedings were expedited so that peace could prevail.
Mr Lungu said any country’s development was anchored on peace, compromise and consensus, failure to which, any developmental plans would be in vain.
“There should be no sacrificial lambs; bampula mafunde (law breakers) must not be entertained. I am glad that the police command has worked very well, please arrest anyone clad in red, blue or green, also those handling cases of violence must expedite them,” he said.
The President declared that he would not shield anyone involved in perpetrating violence regardless of political affiliation and position one held as he was a man who believed in peace.
He said the PF had done well in terms of taking development to all parts of the country despite economists teasing him on the roads, but emphasised that such development made everything easy and helped the under privileged to easily access services.
“Zambians do not want to go back to suffering, they have seen what we have done, this year’s slogan ‘Sonta epo wabomba’ is not for elections only, as PF we do not go to sleep and wake up during elections, our work is throughout for life,” Mr Lungu said.
