TWO traditional rulers on the Copperbelt and Central provinces have intensified sensitisation on the need by their subjects to build lavatories to prevent any possible outbreak of cholera ahead of the coming rainy season.
Chief Chiwala of the Lamba speaking people in Masaiti in Ndola and Chief Chamuka of the Lenje in Kabwe, have noted the importance of having lavatories to prevent any outbreak of cholera.
Chief Chiwala said his team consisting of chiefs and headmen was conducting meetings to educate his subjects on the need to build the lavatories.
The Chief said the programme has intensified in this month of July and will ensure that by the onset of rains, each household in Chiwala would have a lavatory facility.
Once the message was passed, a team of inspectors would be allowed to visit the chiefdom to ensure people were committed to the project.
“In fact, the project is in conjunction with UNICEF and Government is also our partner and so far, we have reached 90 per cent of implementing the project. We do not want a situation where there is an outbreak of any disease such as cholera due to people defecating in open places,” he said.
Chief Chamuka addressed his subjects on the matter in senior Headman Mayumbelo’s area on Thursday, last week and ordered them to build lavatories as a matter of urgency.
The Chief also advised those with lavatories to ensure that they were in good sanitary conditions.
“You know even those lavatories that you already have, you should at least keep them clean and closed, so that you are even able to read a newspaper or eat from inside, because they are clean,” he said.
