THE Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has confiscated over 910 assorted expired drinks in Mwense District of Luapula Province worth K6, 125.
CCPC public relations officer Hannford Chaaba said in a statement that a combined team of CCPC, Mwense District Council and health officers seized over 910 assorted expired drinks worth K6, 125.
The confiscation follows an inspection the commission undertook in the district which has seen a total of eight trading premises being inspected.
The seized drinks include 663 by 425 mls Havana Cola, 60 by 500 mls Fanta, 177 by 500 mls Coca-Cola and 20 by 200 bakers ginger biscuits.
“During the inspection, it was observed that most traders in the district do not check for expiry dates before purchasing the products,” he said.
From this background, Mr Chaaba said the Commission would ensure that it intensifies sensitisation activities in the district.
“We would like to warn traders who want to take the law in their own hands by selling expired products that the commission will not hesitate to punish the erring enterprises,” he said.
He urged traders to note that the sale of expired products was a criminal offence as the practice had a direct negative effect on people’s lives.
“We urge members of the public to be alert whenever they are shopping and notify public health authorities of all expired products on the market.
“The Commission will continue partnering with public health inspectors countrywide in ensuring compliance with the law,” Mr Chaaba said.
