THE Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) will camp the 15’s national team in South Africa in readiness of the 2014 Africa Cup of Nations tournament slated for June in Botswana.
ZRU president Martin Musunka said in an interview yesterday that the decision was arrived at during the executive committee held at Chabanga Lodge in Ndola on Saturday.
Musunka said training in South Africa will greatly help the national team to properly fine tune for the Africa Cup of Nations that will run from June 14 to 21.
“We agreed that the team be camped in South Africa in the last week of May so that they can fine tune ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations that will be held in the second week of June. Training in South Africa will greatly help our players get exposed to the world class facilities,” he said.
He said it was for the same reason that the ZRU re-introduced the inter-provincial tournaments as a way of coming up with a strong side that should compete favourably at such competitions.
Musunka said Joshua Lungu, who is ‘Powerhouse’ Lusaka coach, was appointed head coach of the Midlands Select side to be assisted by Red Arrows coach, Mwamba Chishimba.
He said Diggers coach Robertson Kang’ongwe will be in charge of the Copperbelt side and will be deputised by Mathew Kabeya of Chibuluma.
The ZRU last month announced the re-introduction of the inter-provincial rugby championships between the Copperbelt and the Midlands which will be used as the process of picking national teams at all levels.
The first encounter between the two provincial sides will be played on April 5 on the Copperbelt while the return leg has been set for April 26 in the Midlands.
“We have picked the coaches and their assistants for the inter-provincial teams who will in turn pick their own players. We are holding this tournament so that we can come up with a strong national team to compete at international level,” Musunka said.
