THE Zambia Honey Council (ZHC) has trained 2,240 beekeepers in various honey production and harvesting techniques.
The training aims at improving the quality of honey products and boosting the performance of the sector.
ZHC coordinator Bill Kalaluka said that the training was among other capacity building activities the council was conducting in various parts of the country.
Mr Kalaluka noted that the organisation would this year train about 1,500 beekeepers in five provinces namely, Southern, Eastern, Western, Central and North-Western.
He said the 2,240 beekeepers were trained in honey production, honey harvesting and marketing.
“As a council, we have been training beekeepers in various techniques all aimed at improving production of the product. This year we target to train about 1,500 members,” he said.
Mr Kalaluka added that ZHC has so far linked a total of 110 associations to local buyers through the market linkages programme.
He said the linkage programme had opened a market for the beekeepers, a move he said would contribute to poverty alleviation.
