EGYPT has donated information technology equipment to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in readiness for the general elections next week.
Egyptian Ambassador to Zambia Ragai Nasr said the donation was aimed at building resources to be used by the ECZ to handle the elections.
“We are confident that the ECZ is ready to work and guarantee that its work during the elections is run smoothly. We are donating computers and printers to build up the resources that the Commission needs,” Mr Nasr said.
Mr Nasr said during the hand over of the equipment in Lusaka yesterday that Egypt had made it a priority that the ECZ was assisted, because Zambia had a record of holding peaceful elections.
ECZ chairperson Esau Chulu said the equipment would assist the ECZ provide election services to the nation on time as well as in training staff for the purposes of elections.
“This donation will go a long way to help with the election training programmes,” he said.
Justice Chulu urged the ECZ staff to ensure that the equipment was used for the intended purpose.
