A LUSAKA mother who allegedly poisoned her two children to death has appeared in the Lusaka magistrates’ court for the explanation of the two counts of murder she faces.
Mirriam Mulenga, 26, of Matero Township broke down before Lusaka Magistrate Sylvia Munyinya after the charges were explained to her.
Mulenga, unemployed, is accused of causing the deaths of her two children after giving them doom on January 24 this year.
She is in the two counts alleged on January 24 this year to have murdered her children, Mwiche Nakazwe and Darson Sikazwe.
Mulenga, for unknown reasons had given her three children a pesticide, Doom, but one survived.
She was herself admitted to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) after she consumed the same poisonous substance.
Mulenga was later transferred to Chainama Hospital for counselling and psychotherapy. She was discharged on Friday last week.
Lusaka principal magistrate Mwaka Mikalile allocated the matter to ms Munyinya.
Ms Munyinya explained the charges to Mulenga, but told her that the murder offence was tried in the High Court and, as such, she was only appearing before her for explanation of the charges.
She said that Mulenga would continue appearing for mention in her court, while waiting for instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions for committal to the High Court.
Mulenga will appear for again on March 1 this year.
