Police Cap 628x350By SYLVESTER MWALE –
A TWENTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD man of Mkushi District in Central Province has been arrested for raping his 52-year-old mother after threatening to kill her if she refused to sleep with him.
Moffat Tonga, who is also wanted for murder in Lusaka, raided his mother’s house in Tazara Corridor area in Mkushi at midnight last Saturday before demanding for sex from her.
Central Province Police Commissioner Lombe Kamukoshi who confirmed the incident, told journalists in Kabwe yesterday that the woman sustained painful private parts. Tonga is currently in police custody.
“Facts of the case are that the victim was sleeping in her house when she was attacked by her son who threatened to kill her with a knife if she did not submit. Another interesting thing is that this same rapist is wanted in Lusaka for murder,” Ms Kamukoshi said.
“This is the first time I am hearing this kind of the case since I came into the province. It’s a taboo, especially that it’s a biological mother because usually we receive cases where a father defiles a daughter, but not this one,” she said.
Ms Kamukoshi said Tonga would be transferred to Lusaka to answer to murder charges soon after the conclusion of the rape case in Mkushi where he is expected to appear in court soon.
Meanwhile, Ms Kamukoshi said the stillborn babies that were found exhumed at Chikwasha cemetery in Mkushi were unearthed by dogs contrary to media reports suggesting it was a case of rituals.
Officials at the district council had reported to the police last month that four stillborn babies were found exhumed with one of them without a head and hand at the cemetery near Itala Township.

However, Ms Kamukoshi said investigations had revealed that the stillborn babies were exhumed by dogs as they were buried in shallow graves.
“The exhumation was suspected to have been done by the dogs as the paw prints of the dogs were seen at the grave,” Ms Kamukoshi said. “The people in the community are fond of burying the stillborn babies at the graveyard without the knowledge of the council.”
Ms Kamukoshi also revealed that a police officer in Mkushi, only identified as Detective Constable Yambwa had been arrested for assaulting a suspect who was resisting to be put in police cells.
The police chief, who warned that no one was above the law, revealed that the assaulted suspect was currently receiving treatment while the police were waiting for the confirmation of the medical report before charging their own officer.
