THE Midlands Basketball Association says game management and officiating of the sport has failed to live up to expectations.
That has prompted MBA to further postpone this weekend’s league games in order to concentrate on recruiting and training more game officials to improve the sport.
According a statement issued by MBA secretary Sankisha Chilwesa, the association has noted while clubs have shown great in improvement in their play, the organisational and management of the game has failed to match up.
“As MBA, we are of the view that the level and quality of game management in terms of time keeping and general organisation from the organisational point, conduct and interaction has not been in tandem with the level of play exhibited by teams on the playing field,” Chilwesa said.
Basketball in the country has been hit with some questionable officiating which has resulted in players and coaches verbally and physically attacking match officials.
Chilwesa further said the association would take advantage of the non availability of game venues this weekend to bring forward their programme of recruitment and training of officials to bolster the cardinal unit of the sport.
He urged clubs to second their preferred members either serving or retired who could attend the programme.
Chilwesa said the training was also open to members of the public who were interested in becoming atch officials.
The programme will run starting today until tomorrow at the Zamsure Sports Complex and continues next week on October 7 att he National Sports Development Centre.
