PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu is next month expected to join other heads of State and Government at a European Union (EU)-Africa Summit in Ivory Coast, to discuss peace and security matters.
Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba said Zambia was cognisant of the importance that Africa attached to the EU, hence Mr Lungu’s participation in the indaba.
Mr Kalaba said this in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, while transiting to Congo Brazzaville, where President Lungu is on Wednesday scheduled to attend a Great Lakes regional summit.
This is according to a statement by First Secretary for Press and Tourism at the Zambian Embassy in Addis Ababa Inutu Mwanza.
Mr Kalaba said it was imperative for the Head of State to attend the summit, which is expected to deliberate on the ongoing political turmoil in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
He said President Lungu, who is incoming chairperson for the SADC Organ on Peace, Defense and Security Troika, was concerned that the political disorder in that country had led to more than 5,000 Congolese seeking asylum in Zambia.
