BARLOWORLD Equipment Zambia has upgraded an orphanage centre in Kitwe’s Kawama Township with a call to society to look after vulnerable children.
Managing director Deon Heyns said the company was committed to uplifting the living standards of vulnerable people in society.
Mr Heyns said, during the handover of refurbished Friends of Street Kids’ home, that the company was concerned with the welfare of the needy in society.
He said Barloworld upgraded the houses at the orphanage centre that accommodates more than 30 vulnerable children as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).
“We value the lives of young people especially those in need and the refurbishment of the orphanage will enable the children live in a proper environment,” he said.
Mr Heyns said the company was further engaging the children in various income generating  projects that would sustain their lives, under the theme ‘Lets grow together’.
Barloworld human resources manager Regina Kaunda said society should look after children and the vulnerable.
Ms Kaunda said more than K50,000 had been spent on the refurbishing of the centre and that another K20,000 is expected to be spent on upgrading the structures.
She said beddings and mosquito nets were also donated to each child.
Kitwe Mayor Kelvin Sinyangwe urged other companies to emulate Barloworld in investing in the community.
