Man, 37, held for defiling baby

A FIFTEEN-Month-old baby has been defiled by a 37-year-old man after the parents left it unattended to in Nakonde in Muchinga Province.
Muchinga Police Commissioner Chola Katanga confirmed that the baby was defiled on Sunday around 12:00 hours.
Mr Katanga said the parents to the baby who live in Isoka were visiting their parents in Nakonde and left the baby with a man.
He said the suspect later took the baby in the house and had carnal knowledge of her.
“We have a report in which a baby has been defiled. The father to the victim who is a teacher reported the matter to the police. A medical report has been issued to facilitate medical treatment and examination,” he said.
Mr Katanga identified the suspect as Joe Sichande of Kasichila Village.
He said the circumstances surrounding the matter were that the father to the baby and his wife went to visit their relatives within the area and left the baby at her grandmother’s house.
But the suspect who was a neighbour offered to look after the child for a while and took her to his home where he allegedly defiled the child..
Mr Katanga said the suspect had been arrested and was in police custody.
Meanwhile, police in Mufulira on the Copperbelt have arrested an 18-year- old mother for causing the death of her two-month-old baby by sleeping on it.
Copperbelt Commissioner of police Charity Katanga said police apprehended Eunice Musonda who is suspected to have been drunk when she slept on her baby, between April 29, 2018 and April 30,2018.
Ms Katanga said the baby was found lying on the mattress with blood in its nose.
She said Ms Musonda has been detained in police custody and police have instituted investigations in the matter.
