ZESCO United have landed in Sekondi ahead of tomorrow’s 2014 CAF Confederation Cup last 16 clash against Medeama at Essipong Stadium.
The team landed at Sekondi Airport at around 10:05 hours local time (12:05 hours Zambian time) on a 30 minute flight from Accra’s Kotoka International Airport where they had earlier landed on a Kenya Airways flight on Thursday evening.
Coach George Lwandamina and his 35-member delegation were later driven to the Grand Favor Hotel in Sekondi where they have been accommodated by Medeama.
Immediately after checking in, Lwandamina took his players for a 45 minute walkabout in Sekondi to loosen up after a gruelling seven-hour flight from Zambia to Ghana.
The team was due to hold its first training session late Friday afternoon just across the road from the team hotel at Bompe Technical Secondary School.
Zesco are later today expected train at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) venue at Essipong ahead of tomorrow’s first leg match here.
Meanwhile, Medeama’s Italian-born coach coach Carlos Paulette has declined to comment in the run-up to the match.
“It has always been policy to only comment after a game and I hope you respect that wish,” Paulette said.
And club media officer Ebenezer Aidoo said in an interview yesterday from the clubs’ base in Tarkwa two hours away from Sekondi that they had an idea what to expect from Zesco.
“We are ready for the game, we know Zesco is a very big team in Zambia and they are a financially sound team. We are going to make sure that playing in front of our home fans that everything goes well for us,” Aidoo said.
Zesco will host Medeama in the return leg on March 29 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Winner will advance to the final pre-group stage next month where they will be joined by losers from the CAF Champions League last 16 round stage that kicks off this weekend.
