Surgeons remove 2.3kg tumour from boy (10)

A TEAM of 14 specialists has successfully removed a 2.3 kilogramme tumour from a 10-year-old boy in Kasama.
The boy, who had a Wilmas tumour attached to his kidney was operated on by the visiting surgeons and is recovering well from the procedure.
The operation by the specialists is part of the activities lined up to mark Zambia’s Jubilee celebrations in Northern Province.
Head of delegation Muhumpu Kafwamfwa said the surgeons also operated on a four-year-old girl with pericardial effusion.
The operation included opening up her chest cavity and draining the fluids surrounding her heart.
“The water was preventing the heart from pumping normally,” Dr Kafwamfwa said.
The doctors, who wound up their week-long stay attended to more than 750 patients and conducted in excess of 80 operations.
The specialists drawn from the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka and Ndola Central Hospital had been working closely with resident doctors at Kasama General Hospital.
Many of the patients attended to expressed happiness with the visit from the consultants.
The parents of the children with tumour and heart condition were particularly happy.
“We were referred to go to Lusaka and did not know how we were going to travel there. We had no money. But God has answered our prayers and may He bless the medical personnel with the gifted hands that operated on my child,” one of the mothers Grace Bwalya said.
