By JULIUS PHIRI –
LIGHTNING has struck an electricity transformer in Mkaika Constituency of Katete District plunging the area which was recently electrified by the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) into darkness.
Mkaika Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Phiri said yesterday that REA had already been informed about the damaged transformers.
Mr Phiri said an area covering Matunga Primary School, Walubwe Primary School, Kamiza Health Centre, Gaveni agricultural camp and Gaveni Primary School had all been left in a black-out following the incidence.
“These places were electrified by REA who engaged another contractor but unfortunately, the transformers have been struck by lightning and there is no power since the incident,” he said.
Mr Phiri appealed to REA and the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (Zesco) to replace the blown off transformers in order to restore power in the area.
He said other projects such has Kafunkha Health Centre, Vulamukoko Primary School, Kanjeza Primary School have all been wired waiting for connection to the main grid, adding that at Nyembe Primary School, power was already connected.
