LUSAKA Mayor Mulenga Sata has said good governance is a vital component in the local administration system in steering development at the community level.
Speaking during the Zambia Society for Public Administration (ZSPA) public lecture in Lusaka on Thursday evening, Mr Sata said good governance assisted guiding councilors and city managers in implementing various developmental programmes.
Mr Sata said that public lectures were also important for the country’s development as they were educative to the public, especially the aspect of good governance.
He said the Lusaka City Council (LCC) felt it was important to learn through public discussions from experts on how councils could be developed and managed thus such discourse should be encouraged in society.
United States of America’s University of Delaware Associate Professor in Political Science and International Relations, Theodore Davis said good governance involved accountability, transparency and inclusiveness, participatory, responsiveness and the rule of law.
Prof Davis said World Bank good governance indicators showed that Zambia was performing well as compared to other African countries in promoting good governance.
He said the country had the potential to become a model on Africa.
