Scorecard - Malunga newSINCE the players’ transfer window opened on July 1, several players across the globe have been switching from one club to the other.
We have seen big names in world football clinching deals with some of the top European clubs.
On the global stage, despite an uproar over him biting a World Cup rival, Uruguyuan striker, Luis Suarez has struck a deal with Spanish giants, Barcelona from English side, Liverpool.
There was also a surprise move of Chilean talisman, Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona to Arsenal in England as new Manchester United coach Luis Van Gaal after leading Holland to the 2014 World Cup semi-finals set to boost the English side.
Back home, Zambian players have also not been left out from these movements and last week, we saw Chipolopolo midfielder, Nathan Sinkala getting a chance to feature in the revered UEFA Champions League – Europe’s elite club competition.
Sinkala penned a six-month contract with Swiss top side, Grasshopper, who will this month play in the qualifying round for the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League.
The defensive midfielder previously had another six-month stint at French side, Sochaux.
Fwayo Tembo also sealed a two-year deal with Turkish side, Konyaspor, the move which should help in resurrecting the career of this talented midfielder.
Earlier, Chipolopolo skipper Christopher Katongo found himself a club in South Africa – Wits University while his younger brother, Felix trekked to Egypt where he joined Al Ittihad.
Despite Nchanga Rangers initially bragging that their star striker, Bornwell Mwape was too good and not meant for the South African league, the burly forward still signed a long-term contract with that country’s clubside, Amazulu.
Nkana striker Evans Kangwa got a season-long loan at Club Hapoel Ra’anana in Israel with an option of a permanent move.
To sum up what appeared to be a busy week for Zambian footballers, Collins Mbesuma, who fell out of favour at South Africa’s Orlando Pirates, signed a two-year contract with Mpumalanga Black Aces after impressing coach Clive Barker in a week-long trial.
With these key Chipolopolo players finding club action again, it is hoped that they will also fight to get first-team places to enable them help Zambia in the forthcoming 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September.
I hope before the close of the transfer window on July 31, a few more Zambians will win the hearts of some foreign clubs. Email:malungaf@gmail.com
