By ELIAS CHIPEPO –
RUGBY giants ‘Men at Work’ Diggers and Red Arrows will today battle for supremacy during the Chibuluma Sevens tournament with a fourth cup title on offer for either side.
Both Diggers and Arrows have won three titles already so far and the two would be aiming to add the fourth to top the other but should expect tough competition from this season surprise package Nkwazi.
While Diggers have bagged the MTN, Owen Busange and are joint winners of the KPF American tournament with Arrows, who also won the Ndola and Heroes Sevens, Nkwazi are currently leading the Zambia Rugby Union (ZRU) national league table.
Nkwazi, who are also the Mufulira Sevens champions, are top of the log with 29 points with Arrows a point adrift while Diggers are on 26 points and ‘Powerhouse’ Lusaka, who won the Nchanga 10’s, are fourth on 24 points.
Thus today’s event pits the best cream of the teams competing in the tournament that has attracted about 16 teams while Kansanshi has withdrawn from the competition sponsored by Chibuluma Mines.
On paper, Arrows, the national champions, head into this competition fresh from winning the Ndola Sevens and will want to build on that performance and add more silverware.
Diggers have had an inconsistent performance this season but coach Robertson ‘Plough’ Kangongwe will desperately want an improved play from his lads to return to winning form.
