$150m ethanol plant on cards

THE Sunbird Bioenergy Africa is set to invest US$150 million in the production of ethanol in Kawambwa District of Luapula province.
Kawambwa District Commissioner Ivo Mpasa said in an interview that Chief Mukanta has since allocated the investor with 20,000 hectares of land in the Luena Farm bloc.
Mr Mpasa said the factory would be located between Sub-Chief Muyembe and Chief Chitambo.
He explained that the investor further wanted to engage 20,000 out-grower farmers who would supply cassava to the factory once it starts production.
Mr Mpasa said that the investor intends to commence production in 2015 and it was expected that the factory would employ 600 workers.
He said upon commencement of production the factory would be producing 120 million litres of ethanol.
