POLICE in Chililabombwe are holding a woman and her husband in connection with the death of their one-year-old baby believed to have died from a fall while the couple fought over money.
The couple is alleged to have been throwing the baby at each other while fighting in their bedroom when, in the process, the toddler ended up dropping to the floor with its head first.
Copperbelt Police Chief Joyce Kasosa said the incident happened on Thursday around 18:00 hours within Poor People’s Township in Chililabombwe.
Ms Kasosa named the couple as Eini Maini, 32, and his wife Josephine Mutale, 28.
The couple denied that they dropped the baby to the floor, insisting that the child died of an illness.
However, information obtained from the neighbours indicated that the couple was fighting when in the process they dropped the child to the ground causing fatal injuries.
The couple then rushed the baby to Kakoso Clinic and while there, its condition worsened before they rushed it to Konkola Mine Hospital where the toddler died yesterday morning.
Ms Kasosa said it was then that police apprehended the mother and father for murder of their son.
She said police had arranged for a postmortem to establish the exact cause of death of the child.
“We are in the meantime holding the couple until after a postmortem tomorrow (today) to establish the cause of death of the child,” Ms Kasosa said.
