Mr Lungu, who handed himself to the police at 09:36 hours yesterday after a hunt was launched for him, has been charged with conduct likely to cause the breach of peace.
He was only released around 18:00 hours.
Mr Lungu said earlier after being locked up that he was ready to face anything that would follow.
“I have been arrested on charges of conduct likely to cause the breach of peace, I am ready for whatever will come, other things will come later but what I can say is that I am ready for anything,” he said.
Mr Lungu was interrogated by police for more than two hours.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda said Mr Lungu had been arrested for disobeying instructions by the police against going ahead with the meeting first at Chrismar Hotel and another at Mika, for security reasons.
“We have arrested Mr Lungu for the offence of conduct likely to cause the breach of peace right now we are going to put him in a cell until he meets the bond conditions of two working sureties and will appear
in court soon,” Ms Chanda said.
Ms Chanda said Mr Lungu allegedly organised a group of people on Saturday last week with a view of convening a meeting at Chrismar Hotel but was abandoned before they reconvened at Mika Hotel.
“Initially he had notified us but there were some security concerns that he should not go ahead but he insisted and went to Chrismar Hotel and later Mika, he is likely to appear in court soon,” she said.
Police had a tough time to disperse cadres outside the police station demanding for the release of Mr Lungu after being informed that he had been detained.
