By HELEN ZULU –
THE Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has seized 95 cases of carbonated drinks known as Maracuja from SGC Investment Limited in Lusaka.
The seized product bears labels in Portuguese and had no English language as required by Zambian law.
ZABS head marketing and public relations Hazel Zulu said that the product had therefore been rejected and would be disposed of at a date to be communicated to all stakeholders.
She said in a statement yesterday that the goods were seized after routine market surveillance and inspection conducted to ascertain levels of compliance on regulated products and also to assess adherence to Zambian Standard (ZS 033) for labelling of pre-packaged foods on the market.
“ZABS has seized a total of 95 cases of carbonated drinks known as Maracuja from SGC Investment in Lusaka.
“This is because the product is labelled in a foreign language (Portuguese) and had no English language labelling as required by law,” Ms Zulu said.
She said all importers and all traders who were selling products that were not properly labelled using the correct and official language of communication in Zambia, (English) were violating the Standards Act, Cap 416 of the Laws of Zambia.
