UPND chairperson for information and publicity Charles Kakoma said in a statement yesterday that the party was ready to participate in the three by-elections to be held on June 30, 2015.
Mr Kakoma said it was, however, unfortunate that by the time the elections were taking place, people of these constituencies would have been without a representative in Parliament for more than two years.
“While we are glad the situation will soon be resolved, this delay is unacceptable and the victims of this delay are the constituents,” he said.
Mr Kakoma said that was the reason why the UPND was fighting for a new Constitution in order to avoid constituents going without representation for a long time and a lot of money being spent on by-elections.
To ensure that in the future such revenues are not wasted on politics but are instead invested in the Zambian people, he said, it was essential that judicial reforms were undertaken to increase the independence of the Judiciary.
By ensuring the Judiciary is fully empowered, the courts would be able to resolve such matters with greater efficiency and would be better protected from any political interference or pressures.
