By JAMES KUNDA –
THE Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST) has called for the revision of the Transport Policy with a focus to prioritise safe mobility.
This comes in the wake of the recent road accident that claimed eight lives in Kalomo last Sunday and many others.
ZRST chairperson Daniel Mwamba said in a statement yesterday that the Government should revise the Transport Policy which was formulated in 2002, to address challenges of road accidents.
“The new policy should address traffic related  injuries and mobility as a public health and human rights issue. It should also provide for the design of roads taking into account the role of the public space and needs of vulnerable users,” he said.
Mr Mwamba said the Road and Transport Safety Agency (RTSA) could employ a more proactive approach in identifying the contributory factors that led to road accidents.
The agency should understand how factors that led to accidents inter-relate and how they could be modified and prevented to produce a safer environment for road users.
“Lack of proper sustained coordination among the key stakeholders such us the police, RTSA, hospitals, fire and local authorities is a source of concern and this needs to be addressed,” Mr Mwamba said.
