By MOSES CHIMFWEMBE –
THE Kabwe Golf Club members have accused the Kamal Desai led executive committee of flouting the club’s constitution by setting June 21 as the date for a special annual general meeting.
Desai, when coming up with the date on Tuesday, explained that the date for a special meeting was arrived at after a board of trustees met at the weekend.
But 23 petitioners said yesterday that the move was in contravention of the club’s constitution that demands a notice of 14 days whenever pertinent issues arose.
The petitioners said it was unfortunate that the board of trustees had decided to undermine the importance of the issues raised in the petition.
“We are against the holding of the special meeting in June. Why should they overlook the 14 days notice required by the constitution?” asked one of the petitioners.
They accused Desai of trying to delay the meeting in an attempt to cover up on glaring allegations leveled against him.
“We are not going to buy into their delaying tactics; they are just trying to water down our expectations because the issues we raised are of urgency,” they said.
The petitioners are expected to convene today to chat the way forward on the matter.
The petitioners have accused Desai of having irregularly obtained loans on behalf of the club without seeking the approval of voting members and that the staff at the club has gone four months without being paid their dues.
Other issues raised are that the club cannot run without trustees, a president and his vice who are vital to good governance.
The members have further accused the executive committee of abrogating the constitution by allowing invalid nominations for elections in clear contrast to the legal provisions of the club’s constitution.
