THE Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has clarified that the Withholding Tax (WHT) on rental income is not a new duty as misunderstood by some members of the public.
ZRA commissioner-general Berlin Msiska said in a statement yesterday that withholding tax on rental income had been in effect since the 1970s and was also applicable on interest, commissions, dividends and management and consultancy fees.
Mr Msiska said effective January 1, 2014, the rate of withholding tax on rental income was reduced from 15 per cent to 10 per cent and made a final tax.
He said as part of the commission’s efforts to directly reach out, provide educational information to stakeholders and broaden the tax base, it had enhanced channels of communication.
“ZRA has enhanced its compliance communication strategy by adopting Short Message Service (SMS) to communicate to the public in addition to the traditional methods such as radio, television and leaflets,” he said.
