Police Cap 628x350By REBECCA MUSHOTA –

SESHEKE Central UPND Member of Parliament (MP) Siyanga Siyauya has been apprehended in connection with an attack on Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General Davies Chama on Saturday evening in Mulobezi.
Three other people have also been apprehended, while two firearms have been recovered by police.
Mr Chama and his team were on their way to a campaign meeting on Saturday to drum up support for Mulobezi PF candidate Patricia Mulasikwanda when they were ambushed by suspected UPND cadres.
In the ensuing confrontation, a gun was fired, leading to one person being shot and wounded in Fikili area in Mulobezi.
A pistol with seven rounds of ammunition and other offensive weapons were recovered from a Toyota Hilux registration number ALD 9469 belonging to Mr Siyauya.
The Hilux was one of the vehicles that were used to block the road when the attack happened.
Another firearm used by Mr Chama’s driver to fire at the attackers, was recovered.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda identified the suspects, who include the one who was shot and wounded.
The suspects have not been charged because police are still investigating the incident.
“The suspects include the Sesheke Central Member of Parliament Siyanga Siyauya, Gerad Imanda, Likamba Godfrey, while the fourth one Mushaukwa Mushaukwa is nursing his wounds in Sesheke District Hospital under police guard,” She said.
Ms Chanda said the vehicle has since been impounded while investigations have continued.
Western Province Police Chief Standwell Lungu also said in an interview that the people apprehended will help police establish exactly what transpired.
He said police were now screening all vehicles in the area for arms and other forms of weapons.
“Political parties are not here to hunt each other so they don’t need weapons. They are here to campaign,” Mr Lungu said.
He said police should be informed of every meeting by any political party so that they provide security.
PF media and publicity vice-chairperson Sunday Chanda said the UPND should not conduct politics of violence because it is an old way of doing things.
Mr Chanda alleged that it was clear that UPND had resorted to violence because it was aware that the PF would scoop all the three Parliamentary by -elections on June 30.
