By MOSES CHIMFWEMBE –
‘MIGHTY’ Mufulira Wanderers supporters’ society chairperson Wesley Mutembo has called on the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to ascertain why Zesco United is the only Super Division club that suffers protests by opposition supporters.
Mutembo, who condemned the violence that caused the abandonment of the Week 19 match between the Wanderers and Zesco at Shinde stadium on Saturday, said there was need for FAZ to take keen interest on the matter.
He has also appealed to referees to be professional in the manner they handle highly tensed matches.
“There are no justifications for violence; it still remains duty bound for referees to act professional when handling games, especially those of high magnitude such as the one under discussion. Referees are humans and bound to make mistakes.
We regret the acts of violence that ensued after Zesco United scored a goal that was contested by the Wanderers technical bench and home supporters. The goal was disputed but that is not justification for violence.  It must be put into perspective that it is a small section of supporters that threw objects on the pitch,” Mutembo said.
He further called to the Wanderers executive committee to introduce match stewards as a way of stepping up security at the stadium.
Mutembo said despite the allegations being raised by both teams on the incident, it was responsibility of referee Gladys Lengwe, who handled the match to submit a comprehensive and objective match report to FAZ.
