THE Zambia Ladies golf Union (ZLGU) is scouting for K72, 600 to send a team of four for the first ever All Africa Junior Girls Golf Challenge slated for August 19 to 24 in Mombasa, Kenya.
ZLGU president Moono Mwila said the association has picked on Tina Nawa, Jahaanvie Walia, Serah Zulu and Tavengwa Mwango to represent the country at the tournament slated for the at Nyali Golf and Country Club.
Mwila said the initiative to introduce a girls tournament is aimed at promoting ladies golf on the continent as is the case with the boys tournament that has been running and Zambia has even hosted the event.
She said the association has so far not raised anything from its budget K72, 600 owing to a number of tournaments that the ZLGU has been participating in.
“We have not raised anything yet as our coffers have been strained owing to a number of international tournaments we competed in and hosted, and we did not get any funding from the Sports Council of Zambia. We are hoping to get some positive feedback this week from sponsors we wrote to,” Mwila said.
Mwila appealed to the corporate world to come on board and help the association send a team to the inaugural tournament especially that the golfers have been producing positive results.
On Zambia’s second place finish at at the Gilberson and Page Trophy (G&P) tournament, played on two different courses, held last weekend in Zimbabwe, Mwila expressed happiness with the golfers performance and that she was expecting the same in Kenya.
Zambia finished on 37 points, a point behind winners Kenya and four better than hosts, Zimbabwe with 33 points.
Meanwhile, KALUMIANA KALUMIANA reports golfer Madalitso Muthiya said he will be fit to return to action this week after suffering an injury setback at last weekend’s Sun City Challenge in South Africa.
Muthiya withdrew from the first round of the Sun City Challenge on Thursday after suffering a knee injury just a week after winning the Uganda Open in Kampala.
He said in an interview from South Africa that the injury was minor.
“I had aggravated my knee during the first round of play. It was inflamed so I had to withdraw. I have since been seeing a general practitioner for treatment. I will be OK and just waiting for the pain to subside. So far it is getting better. As soon as I feel ready, I will play,” he said,” he said.
Muthiya said he was hoping to be fit enough to take part in the Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament that starts on August 20.
