By KASONDE KASONDE –
ELEVEN boreholes have been sunk in Mkushi at a cost of K275,000 to avert water shortages in the Central Province district.
Mkushi District Commissioner Luka Mwamba said some areas had been experiencing water shortages, hence the intervention by the Government to drill the boreholes.
Mr Mwamba said that people in the area had for a long time travelled long distances to access water supplies.
“This year alone Government is scheduled to drill 85 boreholes in the district and so far 11 have been sunk,” Mr Mwamba said.
He said the Government had embarked on drilling boreholes in the district.
“I am happy to inform residents in Mkushi that the water shortages will soon be a thing of the past as we embark on this project to provide water,” he said.
Mr Mwamba said the contractors working on the boreholes moved to the district last month and the works were progressing well.
He said in the 2015 National Budget 30 boreholes would be rehabilitated in the district, 10 repaired and 45 drilled.
Mr Mwamba said his office was supervising the works to ensure that people have access to clean drinking water.
He said learning programmes in various schools were also interrupted due to the non-availability of water supply.
