ABIGAIL Chindele and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth bronze medalist Boas Munyonga have been placed on bye in the first round at the 2015 World Judo championships that start today in Astana, Kazakhstan.
According to the draws conducted yesterday by the International Judo Federation (IJF), Chindele who is ranked 71 on the Olympic Games Qualification (OGQ) will join the fray in the second round.
The ‘Kouchi-gaeshi’ technique specialist will square up with Asaramanitra Ratiarison of Madagascar in the 48Kg category today for a place in the third round in Pool A.
Munyonga on the other hand faces an uphill battle in his bid to advance in the championship having been drawn in Pool A with former European champion Ivanov Ivaylo of Bulgaria in the second round.
However, the Zambian will have to wait until Thursday to begin his Olympic quest in the men 81kg class.
Matthews Punzu was also handed a seemingly tough draw in the 66kg preliminary round that takes off tomorrow.
Punza will face 2015 Pan American  Champion Antoine Bouchard of Canada while the unranked Michael Mwabi, who takes to the mat today in the preliminary round, will face Beninese Jacob Gnahoui in the 60kg weight.
