By SANDRA MWILA –
APATHY has characterised the Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) by-elections with only one candidate filing in his nominations for one of the two vacant positions ahead of today’s delayed annual general meeting (AGM) slated for the Government Complex in Lusaka.
Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) president Charles Mwanza is the only candidate that successfully filed in nomination papers before the deadline on Thursday, prompting the SCZ to open the nominations to the floor during the AGM.
The vacancies were created following the death of board member Ian Mbewe in October 2013 while another member Allison Deidre quit her position in November last year.
Acting SCZ general secretary Emmanuel Chitembo said in an interview yesterday that the board resolved to open nominations to the floor during the AGM.
“So far only Mwanza has successfully filed in his nomination, therefore, the board has resolved that the floor be opened for nominations during the AGM for interested parties.
Elections will only take place if more than two people file in their nominations. In an event that less than two file in, then they will go unopposed,” Chitembo said.
He said than in an event that Mwanza remained the only nominee, he would go unopposed and the board would decide the way forward for the other vacant position.
Other items on the agenda are the presentation of the audited financial report for the year 2014/2015.
Finance committee chairperson Haroon Ghumra presented the audited accounts for years 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 which were approved during the last AGM held on December 20, 2013 in Lusaka.
