By REBECCA MUSHOTA in Dar-es-Salaam –
PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu is expected here today to attend the inauguration of Tanzanian President-elect John Magufuli.
Zambia’s High Commissioner to Tanzania Judith Kapijimpanga told the media yesterday that the President was invited by the Tanzanian government to attend the inauguration of Mr Magufuli of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Party.
Mr Magufuli, a former minister of Works, was announced winner on Thursday last week after beating Edward Lowassa of the Ukawa coalition in an election held on Sunday.
“We are excited that the President confirmed his participation in the inauguration, which will take place in the National Stadium.
“The President will be accompanied by Government officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba,” Ms Kapijimpanga said.
She said other heads of State that included South African President Jacob Zuma and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame had also confirmed their attendance.
After the inauguration, President Lungu and other heads of State will be at a State banquet.
The envoy said Zambia and Tanzania had enjoyed wonderful relations since the years when the founding fathers Julius Nyerere and Kenneth Kaunda were presidents.
