By REBECCA MUSHOTA –
THE Zambian High Commission in Tanzania has urged Zambians living abroad to travel back home and register as voters.
High Commissione to Tanzania Judith Kapijimpanga said in an interview recently that it is important for Zambians living abroad to make efforts and take advantage of the on-going mobile voter registration exercise to register as voters.
Ms Kapijimpanga said the High Commission had since sensitised residents living in Tanzania to travel to Zambia and register.
“We called for a meeting with the residents here in Tanzania where we encouraged them to go home and register as voters because it is very important,” she said.
Ms Kapijimpanga said she was working closely with the executive of the Zambian Community in Dar es Salaam (ZCID) to sensitise Zambians on the need to register as voters.
A huge population of Zambians live in Tanzania.
A number of them are employed by the Tanzania Zambia Railways (TAZARA), Tanzania Zambia Mafuta (TAZAMA), MoFED and other institutions.
Zambians also own a number of lodges in Dar es Salaam.
Ms Kapijimpanga said Zambians in Tanzania mobilise themselves regularly and meet with the help of the High Commission to address various issues.
She said Zambians living abroad currently could not register from their host countries but that through ZCID, these issues had been addressed through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during a meeting held in Lusaka last month.
