FORMER Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) treasurer, Rix Mweemba has appeared as the front-runner to take over the post following the resignation of incumbent Kelvin Mutafu amid a corruption allegation scandal.
Mweemba is said to be favoured by the current FAZ executive and is the person lined up to join their camp come 2016 FAZ elections.
But with the latest twist, Mweemba may get into Football House earlier than planned.
When contacted, Mweemba said he was not privy to immediately taking over from Mutafu but confirmed he would contest the FAZ treasurer position in next year’s elections.
“I can confirm that I intend to stand as FAZ treasurer during the FAZ Annual General Meeting next year but I am not privy to anything about taking over now. I want to serve Zambia again through FAZ,” he said.
Mweemba was treasurer from 2004 to 2008 under Teddy Mulonga’s reign as FAZ president.
He is credited with raising Kaleya Small Holdings (Kascol) to international levels where farming out-grower contributed a significant percentage to the sugarcane that Zambia Sugar turns into sugar.
Mweemba was also chairperson of Kascol Rangers Football Club which played Division One football at some point.
He said he wanted to serve the country again and would bring level-headedness into the position.
“FAZ has done the best they can and their efforts should not be disregarded. What is going on right now is not good where they are accusing each other.
That is just messing yourself up. My role will be to build. That is where I will want to assist and concentrate,” he said.
Mweemba would focus on the bigger picture, which is to see Zambia qualify to the World Cup and jokingly stated that “I always wanted to take over from Mutafu.. but only after the 2016 FAZ elections.”
