FOURTEEN families in Kantatamwe Village in Chief Ndubeni’s area have been left homeless after torrential rain wreaked havoc resulting in the collapse of several houses and leaving the families stranded.
Families residing in these houses have become homeless, while the district administration officials who rushed to the spot to assess the damage assured that the Government would assist the affected families.
The downpour, which took place on December 9, had led to disruption of farming activities.
Mpongwe District Commissioner Keith Maila, who confirmed the disaster, said there were several cases of wall collapse after a heavy downpour in the district, and that several people suffered minor injuries.
“We have verified the extent of the damage and written to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) and we are waiting for a response,” Mr Maila said.
Mr Maila, however, said the district administration had provided shelter and food supply.
“We have provided shelter and other necessary items to the affected families. We will rehabilitate all of them (houses) in every possible way,” he said.
