By KENNEDY MUPESENI –
GOVERNMENT has successfully revamped the once-viable Kalungwishi State Ranch in Mporokoso District in Northern Province.
The ranch has so far been stocked with more than 80 heads of cattle and all the facilities such as dip-tanks and other infrastructure at the ranch have been put in place.
District Commissioner Bridget Chitundu said the ranch was now fully revamped with 85 animals and the installation of the necessary infrastructure.
Ms Chitundu said the revival of the ranch would contribute significantly to the development of the livestock sector, and that the centre would be a training base for livestock farmers in the area.
She said the idea behind the refurbishing exercise was to provide technical know-how in the management of livestock while providing affordable meat to the residents.
Ms Chitundu said a demonstration centre had since been established to offer internship to students doing agriculture, especially livestock production students from the various learning institutions.
Government, she said, was keen in ensuring that cattle rearing in the province was enhanced.
The ranch has been rebuilt with support from the Ministry of Agriculture and the provincial administration.
Kalungwishi Cattle Ranch, which has been neglected for the past 20 years, has 46,000 hectares of pasture land and once fully developed, it would accommodate thousands of animals.
