THE Zambia Cricket Union (ZCU) has appointed Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) chief risk and senior credit officer, Tracey Gains as matron of the Girls’ Cricket in Zambia.
Gains, who was unveiled yesterday at Lusaka’s Stay Easy Hotel will be tasked to promote the sport among girls in Zambia.
Union president, Reuben Chama said during the unveiling ceremony that the initiative came about to help take the sport to young girls around the country.
Chama said girl children were not motivated to take up and stay in the sport, adding their plight will now be the main focus of the Union.
Meanwhile, Gains said she is looking forward to working with ZCU, adding that her ambition was to have almost all age groups participate in cricket.
Gains, who admitted never having played cricket before, said she has been a keen follower of the sport and hopes her presence will help motivate the girl child to play cricket and make the sport popular among girls.
And ZCU life member, Haroon Ghumra, who was also present at the event, commended the ZCU for the initiative, adding that it will help in the development and growth of the sport.
Ghumra said the initiative was good, adding that the future of any sport lay in the youths.
“I hope that through Gains, the sport will be uplifted and attract a lot of young girls to be playing cricket,” he said.
And ZCU committee member in charge of the girls cricket, Judy Mbulo welcomed Gains adding that her committee would make sure that it works hand-in-hand with the matron to  make her work easier.
The function was also attended by ZCU top brass, including Martin Mutono and treasurer Peter Kangongwe.
