By CHATULA KANGALI –
MANSA Municipal Council has partnered with a Chinese company to build a quarry mine in Chief Kalasa-Lukangaba’s area to help diversify its revenue base.
Public relations officer Chris Mulaliki said the local authority in partnership with the Chinese company would construct a quarry mine in the area.
Mr Mulaliki said in an interview that construction of the mine was one of the council’s diversification programmes aimed at increasing the revenue base.
He said the local authority had a low revenue base due to lack of industries where tax and levies could be collected.
Mr Mulaliki said the mine would be the first of its kind in Mansa and that it would provide jobs for the people in the region.
“Mansa has no industries, we have very few sources of revenue and this is why we have partnered with a Chinese company to construct a quarry mine in the area,” he said.
The local authority had applied for a mining licence and was waiting for response from the ministry of Mines.
Mr Mulaliki said the construction of the mine on 30 hectares of land would commence as soon as the licence was granted.
He said the cost, production capacity and the workforce of the mine would be known after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese firm.
