THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has said access to good quality education is cardinal to the nation’s economic and sustainable and accelerated growth.
Party leader Hakainde Hichilema said education was the best investment and equaliser.
“All Zambian children must have the opportunity to access good quality education and equally for Government, businesses and any organisation to reach their potential, appointments must be made on merit and not favouritism,” Mr Hichilema said.
UPND also placed a strong focus on ensuring that young Zambians were taught good skills so that they were equipped with the necessary capabilities to find employment or start out their own businesses.
He said this could be achieved through consultation with teachers, industry and informed long-term economic planning that would match skills with demand.
“We also want to see established business nurturing our young talent through initiatives to gain experience in the workplace and transfer skills,” he said.
The opposition leader said the fundamental problems faced included lack of accountability in the education.
